Why a CPA & EA

Two credentials, one goal: getting your taxes right.

Software and seasonal storefronts can get a return filed. What they can't always give you is a credentialed professional who understands your whole situation and is still around when questions come up in July.

Certified Public Accountant

CPAs are licensed by a state board of accountancy after passing a rigorous national exam and meeting education and experience requirements. They're held to professional ethics standards and continuing-education rules.

Enrolled Agent

Enrolled Agents are federally licensed by the IRS and specialize in taxation. It's the highest credential the IRS awards, and it allows an EA to represent taxpayers before the IRS on audits, collections, and appeals.

Both, in one person

Pete McNeil holds both credentials and has practiced for nearly 20 years. That means careful preparation up front, and someone qualified to speak for you if the IRS ever has questions.

  • Year-round, not seasonal. Tax questions don't stop on April 15, and neither do we.
  • Federal and Virginia, together. Your state return is prepared alongside your federal return, not as an afterthought.
  • Real answers, in plain English. We'll explain what's on your return and why.
  • Personal, not high-volume. A focused Roanoke practice where your return gets careful, individual attention.
  • Confidential, always. Client relationships stay private. We don't publicize who we work with.
  • Someone in your corner. If the IRS ever has questions, you have a credentialed professional who can represent you.

FAQ

Common questions

Don't see your question? Just ask.

What should I bring or send for my tax return?

Generally: last year's federal and Virginia returns (if you're a new client), photo ID, and Social Security numbers and birthdates for everyone on the return. Then your income documents (W-2s, 1099s, Social Security and retirement statements, brokerage statements, K-1s), records for deductions and credits (mortgage interest, property tax, charitable gifts, childcare, education costs), and any letters from the IRS or Virginia Tax.

If you're self-employed or own rental property, bring your income and expense totals too. Once we talk, we'll give you a checklist tailored to your situation.

Do you prepare Virginia state returns?

Yes. We prepare your Virginia return along with your federal return, including part-year and nonresident returns if you moved into or out of Virginia during the year.

I got a letter from the IRS. Can you help?

Yes. Don't ignore it, and try not to panic. Many notices are routine. Send us a copy and we'll help you understand what it means and how to respond. As both an Enrolled Agent and a CPA, Pete is authorized to represent taxpayers before the IRS, so with your authorization he can deal with the IRS on your behalf. We can also help with letters from Virginia Tax.

I haven't filed in a few years. Is it too late?

It's usually better to file late than not at all, and we can help you catch up on prior-year returns. Reach out and we'll talk through where things stand.

Do I have to come in, or can we work remotely?

Get in touch and we'll talk about what works best for you. Please don't email Social Security numbers or tax documents as ordinary attachments. When you're ready to share documents, we'll explain the secure way to send them.

How much does tax preparation cost?

It depends on what's involved in your return. Contact us with a brief description of your situation and we'll discuss fees before any work begins.
